Herringbone/Double Helical Gears
This is a specific type of helical gear which is a stack combination of two opposite hands helical gears. This design advantage is that the side thrust is balanced by the opposite hand of helical gear; which in terms, create less loading to the bearing and enable more smoothly, higher loading capability. Thus it is ideal to be used in torque gearboxes or any other heavy loading application. The herringbone gears and double helical gear are often are basically the same but the double helical gears have groove in between the two helical gears whereas herringbone gears has not. On production prospective, the herringbone gears are more difficult to manufacture and cannot be ground.
