• Bevel Gears > Hypoid Gears
Hypoid gears are similar to the spiral bevel gears but have offset intersecting center. The Pinion is offset from the Gear with the right amount which enables the Pinion shaft to pass the Gear shaft without interference. Hence the shafts can be mounted on both to have better support. In general, Hypoid gears can achieve higher speed reduction and heavier loading than bevel gears. Also, the smooth meshing characteristics make hypoid gears have more potential to reduce noise and vibration. However, it is more difficult to manufacture and design due to the complicity of its meshing mechanism. In comparison with worm drives for the same performance, hypoid gear pairs can be more rigid, smaller in size and higher efficiency.
