• Pinion and Rack
Rack and pinion is a combination mechanism to transmit rotational motion to linear motion. A rack is toothed on one side on a straight bar, the teeth cut can be spur or helical. With the same pro and cons characteristics as normal spur/ helical gears. In production, it is essential to have good control during cutting and heat treatment process as the straight rack tends to be deflected or twisted during these processes.
Rack and pinion is often being compared with ball screws as the same transmission mechanism. Pinion and rack has the advantage in carrying large loading, unlimited in length etc. Ball screw system has lower backlash, hence higher precision then the rack system.
